If the Coronavirus Era is remembered for anything, let it be for perfecting the ultimate night in.
I take pride in my social distancing skills, i’ve spent most of my life practicing social distancing so this ain’t my first rodeo, son. Aside from a short stint following a break up where I spent a few years drinking, travelling, drinking, dating and drinking a bit more, I have always been and will always be a homebody.
Autumn and Winter are genuine hibernation months for me but there’s something to be said about a summers afternoon in your garden, followed by an evening with blankets and movies. Perhaps we won’t see as many garden parties or barbecues with friends and family this year but if you’re in the privileged position to have a house (and maybe even a garden) and all you have to do to save lives this year is to stay at home, then you could spend every evening having the perfect night in.
This is really a personal preference I suppose, but it’s a pre-requisite to getting started for me. I know my Mother would ‘Ha’ loudly at this because I’ve digressed into a messy teenager since moving back home, but you really will feel much calmer and happier if your house, garden or living room is tidied and free of clutter before you start setting up for your night in.
Fairy Lights and Scented Candles
Whether it’s warm enough for you to sit in your garden – if you’re lucky enough to have one – or you have to make do with your living room, fairly lights make everything cosier and magical. Find some seasonal candles or turn on your wax melter so that you fill the space with fresh cotton tones or warm fruity smells to set the mood.
Dinner and Snacks
One of my favourite memories from last summer was a night in with a friend, we cooked fajitas, made Aperol Spritz cocktails, played a pre-set playlist in the garden and spent the early evening chatting away. It’s very rare that I cook, I live a dull beige life full of carbs so I truly enjoy the times when I get to enjoy a really nice meal with family or friends. Whether you order an indulgent, calorie filled pizza or spend the evening cooking a hearty meal together, I guarantee the food will be a focus for the evening.
If you’re on your own
The perfect night in doesn’t have to involve other people. I genuinely value the evenings that I spend alone and take the time to pamper myself; Bath, face mask, hair mask, thick, rich layers of moisturiser and then some chilled activities; reading, watching movies, I’ve even tried yoga and really enjoyed it. The best thing about a night in on your own is you can plan exactly how you want it.
When with friends, you’ll never watch the whole film anyway, so pick something you’ve seen before or don’t mind missing parts of. If you’re on your own, why not indulge in a guilty pleasure or rent something from Sky Movies? Personally, you wouldn’t catch me anywhere near a horror movie but each to their own, just make sure it’s worth the time!
Fresh bed sheets
Go on, end the night on a high and get into crisp, fresh, untouched bed sheets. You know you want to.
Night’s in don’t need to be complicated, they’re ideal specifically because they’re low in cost and minimal effort is required. Whether you dress up to make yourself feel good or find your cosiest pyjama’s to lounge in, whether you cook an elaborate meal or binge on chocolate all night, it doesn’t matter but personally, I think the excitement is in the planning.
