“Try to learn to breathe deeply, really to taste “Try to learn to breathe deeply, really to taste food when you eat, and when you sleep, really to sleep. Try as much as possible to be wholly alive with all your might, and when you laugh, laugh like hell. And when you get angry, get good and angry. Try to be alive. You will be dead soon enough.” ~ Ernest Hemingway

I posted this on my stories a few days ago but it’s really resonating with me so I wanted it somewhere more permanent. Where better to post profound quotes than against pretty pictures of lovely views?
P.s I love where I live
P.p.s I still haven’t made it even halfway through Gingerbread
Two books. Two poorly written reviews. CMBYN is a Two books. Two poorly written reviews.

CMBYN is a beautifully written account of 17 year old Elio falling in love with 24 year old Oliver during a summer in Italy at his (Elio’s) parents villa. I loved everything about this book; the intensity, the vulnerability, the intimacy, even the moments of discomfort. It was the escape I desperately needed from a devastating start to 2021.

On Earth is a letter from a son to a mother, it moves from stories of his childhood to knowledge of his mother’s past in Vietnam, creating an explanation for the nuances and intricate details of their family’s life. Full disclosure; I probably didn’t appreciate the story as much as I could have, or should have. Perhaps I’d had too much purple prose by this point but it is a beautifully written and terribly sad story. A quote that has stuck with me;

‘The truth is we don’t have to die if we don’t feel like it.

Just kidding.’
What can be said in New Year rhymes, That's not be What can be said in New Year rhymes,
That's not been said a thousand times?

The new years come, the old years go,
We know we dream, we dream we know.

We rise up laughing with the light,
We lie down weeping with the night.

We hug the world until it stings,
We curse it then and sigh for wings.

We live, we love, we woo, we wed,
We wreathe our brides, we sheet our dead.

We laugh, we weep, we hope, we fear,
And that's the burden of the year.

Ella Wheeler Wilcox, “The Year” (1910)
Sorry for the spam today, I haven’t touched this Sorry for the spam today, I haven’t touched this account in a week or so and I had the sudden urge to update it today 🙃.
I rushed to finish An American Marriage today as my last book of the year, tomorrow I plan to write up my end of year round-up of books for my blog (which has been severely neglected for months). I’m really happy with the vast majority of books I’ve read this year and my aim next year is again, not to worry about quantity, but aim for quality.
Behind AAM are the beginning of my TBR pile for 2021, any there that you’ve read?

This Time Next Year - Sophie Cousens

I enjoyed this book a lot but there wasn't really any festive feels to it so i'm not sure how it's ended up on all the festive-reads lists. Yes, the protagonists birthdays are on New Years Day but that's after Christmas and the focus is on birthdays, not the festive season sooo...
There were also some problematic moments throughout that I probably wouldn't have noticed 5 years ago but now i'm a cynical almost-30 year old with a grudge against fuck boys. Minnie is a great character but i'm at war with whether Quinn deserved to be forgiven. It's at this point I question whether the label 'fuckboy' can be assigned to someone who is behaving a certain way as a result of their own demons. That-said, does it matter? Does your past excuse the way you treat others in your present? This probably requires more of a blog post than an Instagram post to delve into but I can't be bothered. The long and short of it is I DID enjoy the book, a lot. And I really did like Quinn, there were just some actions from him that I was not on board with.

Away with the Penguins - Hazel Prior
Big fan, big big fan. It's bizarre and it's very innocent and like nothing i've ever read before. Patrick has got to be the only weed-smoking, dole-taking, foster-care-raised twenty-something-year-old who says 'fricking' instead of 'fucking'. I found moments like that very unbelievable in his character but aside from this, I loved everything about the book. It's quite funny, so heart warming and achieves whatever Prior's goal is in making me care more about the Earth.
I picked up AwtP because it reminded me of my Nan, who loved penguins and, in fact, Veronica McCreedy reminded me a little of her too. She was quite a hard-faced woman who kept everything very close to her heart but if you really knew her, you knew how much she loved and cared. I'd thoroughly recommend if you love Penguins, old people and/or the environment.
