I say routine…but this is week two.
I know it’s early days but if working from home full time were to be on the agenda for the rest of my working career, I probably wouldn’t be too disappointed. Saving money and time on commuting? Being able to listen to music or watch my favourite TV shows all day? What’s not to love?
I’m still navigating how to fully optimise my time and also my well-being while working from home and these are a few things i’m trying;
Creating a personal work space built for comfort and practicality.
I’ve managed to make myself a little office up in my loft room but I want to work on making it a bit cosier and a bit more personal. I like that I’m facing the window so I can look outside and, luckily, we’re having some lovely weather at the moment.
I haven’t fully mastered this yet but it’s something I’ve really wanted to do; wake up, have a good breakfast, read something interesting or do a workout before starting work. I feel like it sets you up for a productive day.
The weather has a massive effect on my well-being and right now the sun is shining through my window so I put some music on and danced around my office for a bit. Whether you put a YouTube work out video on and do some exercise, make up your own exercise routine or go for a walk around your garden, I think it’s really important to get up and move your body.
Look, I never take a full hour’s lunch break and maybe that’s not the recommended advice, but I do take a few regular intervals; 5-10 mins every hour or so to get a cup of tea or stare out of the window (or at Instagram).
TV, Podcasts, Youtube, Music
Almost every blog i’ve read has urged readers not to have Netflix on in the background so i’m not gonna recommend it, but personally it creates comfort for me, not distraction. I usually have something on that I’ve watched a million times, I know the show so well that I can recite the dialogue in my sleep. I like having some noise on in the background, I tend to find music more distracting because it has such an effect on my mood but repeat TV shows and comfort movies give me a little bit of company.
I wonder if, as the weeks go by, my opinion on working from home will change – I suspect not as i’ve always been such a home body. I used to panic about going back to school after the holidays and have experienced similar feelings when returning to work so working from home is the ideal situation for me – despite current events!
