Disney+ Review & My Top Picks

April 1, 2020 | by thesundaystories

Let me start by saying, I had no intention of getting a Disney + account, for no particular reason other than it hadn’t really occurred to me. I have most of my favourite Disney films on DVD and I wasn’t sure I needed to spend money every month on a Disney account. Of course, then Covid19 struck and I started to consume comfort TV like my life depended on it (it does).

I opened an account to take advantage of the 7 day free trial and have uhmed and ahhed all week over whether to cough up. I was pleasantly surprised by the cost, at £5.99 a month I do feel that’s quite fair when you consider how much it can be to buy just one Disney movie on DVD and there’s no obligation to continue the subscription so even if i’m sick of it in 3 week’s time, i’ve spent £6 and watched my fair share of movies already.
The app works exactly the same way as Netflix and Prime and I don’t need to give you a review of the films included, though I was surprised to find that some of my favourite films fall under the Disney banner so I thought i’d give you a list of some of my favourites outside of the classics that you *might* not (probably did) know were Disney!

  • The Parent Trap (The Original & the Lindsay Lohan version)
  • Mrs Doubtfire
  • 10 Things I Hate About You
  • Home Alone 1 & 2 (& 3 if you actually watch that one)
  • The Santa Clause 1, 2 & 3
  • Cool Runnings
  • Never Been Kissed
  • Pollyanna
  • Sister Act 1 & 2
  • The Sound of Music
  • Flubber
  • Three Men and a Baby/Little Lady
  • While You Were Sleeping

I’ve binged a LOT in the last week and aside from a few in the above list, i’ve also watched;

  • Beauty and the Beast (1991)
  • The Princess Diaries (1 & 2)
  • Tangled
  • The Emperors New Groove
  • Star Wars I (The Phantom Menace)

All in all, it’s probably a really good investment for parents with kiddos who can sit through a movie and it’s got all the old Disney Channel shows for slightly older Children but I don’t think I’ll pay for it continuously, perhaps just for a few months….or until Christmas because it’s got some great films that i’ll binge on constantly from about September through to December.

Two books. Two poorly written reviews. CMBYN is a Two books. Two poorly written reviews.

CMBYN is a beautifully written account of 17 year old Elio falling in love with 24 year old Oliver during a summer in Italy at his (Elio’s) parents villa. I loved everything about this book; the intensity, the vulnerability, the intimacy, even the moments of discomfort. It was the escape I desperately needed from a devastating start to 2021.

On Earth is a letter from a son to a mother, it moves from stories of his childhood to knowledge of his mother’s past in Vietnam, creating an explanation for the nuances and intricate details of their family’s life. Full disclosure; I probably didn’t appreciate the story as much as I could have, or should have. Perhaps I’d had too much purple prose by this point but it is a beautifully written and terribly sad story. A quote that has stuck with me;

‘The truth is we don’t have to die if we don’t feel like it.

Just kidding.’
What can be said in New Year rhymes, That's not be What can be said in New Year rhymes,
That's not been said a thousand times?

The new years come, the old years go,
We know we dream, we dream we know.

We rise up laughing with the light,
We lie down weeping with the night.

We hug the world until it stings,
We curse it then and sigh for wings.

We live, we love, we woo, we wed,
We wreathe our brides, we sheet our dead.

We laugh, we weep, we hope, we fear,
And that's the burden of the year.

Sorry for the spam today, I haven’t touched this Sorry for the spam today, I haven’t touched this account in a week or so and I had the sudden urge to update it today 🙃.
I rushed to finish An American Marriage today as my last book of the year, tomorrow I plan to write up my end of year round-up of books for my blog (which has been severely neglected for months). I’m really happy with the vast majority of books I’ve read this year and my aim next year is again, not to worry about quantity, but aim for quality.
Behind AAM are the beginning of my TBR pile for 2021, any there that you’ve read?
